Film Fun: Big Cinematic Flops

Sometimes watching a cinematic flop can be just as entertaining as watching a film that hit it big with audiences. The next time you’re in the mood to relish a box office bomb, consider checking out one of these fun film flops:

Cutthroat Island
This over-the-top 1995 pirate film lost nearly $82 million at the box office. The movie, starring Geena Davis and Matthew Modine, tells the story of a female pirate and her companion as they search for a hidden island that holds a secret treasure. If you’re in the mood for a swashbuckling action picture that pulls out all the pirate-movie clichés, then this is a great choice for you.

The Adventures of Pluto Nash
This 2002 flick lost $93 million at the box office. Starring Eddie Murphy, Jay Mohr, and Randy Quaid, the movie tells the story of a man who struggles to keep his lunar nightclub out of the hands of the mafia. The film’s talented cast and interesting comic premise couldn’t save it from taking a nosedive with audiences, largely because of its corny plot and dialogue. This film falls squarely into it’s-so-bad-it’s-good territory, and you’ll enjoy laughing at its sheer badness as the story unfolds.

Town and Country
This star-packed 2001 romantic comedy lost a whopping $95 million at the box office. Despite having a shining cast of performers (including Diane Keaton, Warren Beatty, and Andie MacDowell), the movie’s massive budget paralleled that of many massive action pictures and its audience appeal just couldn’t bring in enough profit to justify the budget, which made this flick one of the biggest money flops of the decade. If you’re hankering for a cornball romantic comedy full of the genre’s most eye-rolling clichés, this is a good choice for you.

The Postman
This 1997 Kevin Costner film lost around $63 million at the box office. The story, set in a post-apocalyptic future, tells the story of a man’s quest to bring postal service back into the world as a way of rebuilding civilization. The movie is packed with dramatic lingering shots, sweeping symphonic music, and endless attempts to infuse the story and characters with epic grandeur – and all of these features make the movie a fun choice if you’re looking to giggle at an over-the-top film experience.

Stealth
This 2005 science fiction flick starting Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel, and Jamie Foxx lost $63 million at the box office. The movie tells the story of three pilots in a top-secret military program who struggle to stop a burgeoning artificial intelligence program before it spurs the world to break into war. The movie’s expensive special effects couldn’t compensate for its weak storyline and undeveloped characters when it came to turning a box office buck. But Stealth is a great choice if you’re looking for pure visual fun and sci fi wildness without having to use your brain or emotions too much. It’s like pop music for the eyes.
